Welcome Nick Adams as new Family Support Worker for Hawthorne!

We are happy and excited to welcome staff member Nick Adams as the Hawthorne FSW for the remainder of the 2020 -21 school year. He assumes the position held by Paula Murray who came out of retirement to support Hawthorne students and families when our position became vacant last fall. We thank Paula for her work and commitment to our families and collaborating with Nick to ensure a smooth transition to Hawthorne.

Nick is no stranger to the Family Support position. He served as an FSW for several years before leaving the district. He returns to us after several years away where he worked at the YMCA, as an Area Director (Seattle Parks and Rec), Vice President of the Boys and Girls Clubs of King County and as the Chief of Staff for Friends of Youth.  He brings over 12 years of experience and has supported many students, families and communities while working as a FSW at 8 different schools.

Please reach out and welcome Nick to our Hawthorne School Community! His contact information is naadams @seattleschools.org or you can call the main office at 206.252.7210.

AAMA launching Listen and Learn Forum February 2021

The office of African American Male Achievement (AAMA) is launching our Listen and Learn forum in February 2021 to continue to listen to Black families as we reconstruct our educational system to celebrate the brilliance and excellence of Black boys and teens.

AAMA is committed to the long journey of dismantling a legacy of systemic racism. We invite Black families to participate and collectively envision what an educational environment looks like for Black boys and teens to thrive. Your voice will help build the office's intentional, long-term plan.

    Listen and Learn Forum Questions

Some of the questions discussed at the forums include:

    1. What does a safe and nurturing learning environment look like for Black boys and teens? And are these reflected in your experience with your child’s school?
    2. Which of your child’s teachers have been your favorite? And why? What skills and knowledge do all educators need to support the learning and development of Black boys and teens?
    3. What does it look like when your child is excited to learn and share their brilliance? What must be present for this to happen at school?
    4. What rituals, routines, and practices would you like to see in the SPS school environment that honors students’ cultural strengths and celebrates their Blackness and identity?
    5. Does your child feel safe at school? What policies or rules would help your child feel safer?
    6. Are there in- or out-of-school programs that are helping your child thrive? In what ways do you see these programs or spaces having a positive impact?
    7. What has been the best and most difficult part of remote learning? And what must be in place for you to send your child back to school?
    8. What are the most important things for educators and school systems to know about building a strong relationship with you and your family?

These forums are focused on the voices of Black families in SPS. AAMA will publish and share the findings with our larger community, including professional development for staff, later this year.

Open Enrollment for School Choice Window Extended

The deadline to participate in Open Enrollment for School Choice has been extended to February 26.

    Applying for Another School

If your student wants to apply to attend a school that is not their assigned school, you must submit a School Choice form. We encourage families to apply during the Open Enrollment period. Only forms submitted during Open Enrollment will receive tiebreakers.

Applications received after Open Enrollment are prioritized based on the date the application is received. School Choice forms are available online or at the John Stanford Center. More information and the forms are available on the School Choice page.

The results of Open Enrollment for the 2021-22 school year will be available online in April.

If your student is currently attending an option school or another school that is not their attendance area school by choice, they can continue at this school until the highest grade offered at that school without having to apply during Open Enrollment again.

Inclement Weather Information- Planning for winter weather in 2020-21 is different than in past years. As a result of remote learning, we are better positioned to continue school even when it is snowing, and or the roads are icy. Changes to school schedules because of winter weather will be limited and traditional “snow day” closures are unlikely. If winter weather requires the cancellation of in-person learning or the closure of school buildings, all students will learn remotely.

    Week of 1/13/2021:

    Hello and Happy New Year!
As we begin the New Year, we would like to let our students, and families know that we are very proud of how everyone has been able to adapt to a new style of learning. This school year has been like no other, with the difficulties that the pandemic has put upon us, both in our schooling, and home lives.  We have been able to shift to virtual learning, and have seen a lot of growth in our students. This wouldn’t have been possible without the support that our children have gotten both at home, and in the community. Thank you for all you do to help our children be successful!

Please come and join us for Hawthorne’s Open House!
January 20 from 6-7pm for Kindergarten only
    February 4 from 6-7pm for K-5th grades
