    Hawthorne's New Playground!

Artist Rendering of Hawthorne's new playgroundHawthorne students, families, staff, neighbors, and community partners are working together to re-imagine our school grounds. Friends of Hawthorne PTA partnered with the Pomegranate Center to lead a rich community design process and develop a plan transforming our large asphalt schoolyard into a tree-filled sanctuary. We’ve created a vision to make this space more than a recess playground. We believe it can be a community gathering place, provide a connection with nature, and foster open-ended learning.

During this process over 400 students have taken part in STEAM project-based learning activities including site mapping and studying storm water. These in-school activities will continue throughout this project and specific STEAM based lessons are being developed for use in the future as the project continues.

The plan has been broken into smaller phases and, after a year of fundraising, construction began on Phase 1 in July 2019. With the generous support of Seattle Department of Neighborhood, King County Parks, the Nature Conservancy, and Seattle Public School we look forward to opening our new creative, natural playspace and renovated sport courts this fall.
