State testing taking place April and May for 3-5th graders. For specific testing dates, contact your student’s teacher. Please make sure your student is present, well-rested, and eaten breakfast.


Week of April 20, 2026

Musical Performance: Monday, MAY 11th, 2026 Kinder-2nd Grade 5:30-6:30 p.m. 3rd-5th Grade 7-7:45 p.m.

Please join us to celebrate the musical accomplishments of our Hawthorne students. The theme for this year is “OZ”…Celebrating the original musical story and the new addition of songs from Wicked.
The performance begins at 5:30pm starting with our Kindergarten through 2nd Grade finishing at 6:30 p.m. and our 3rd through 5th beginning at 7 p.m. and ending by 7:45 p.m. There will be a 30 minute “intermission” between kinder-2nd grade and the 3rd-5th grade performances.
If your kiddo is in the kinder-2nd grade performance but not in the 3rd-5th Grade, at the end of their performance this would be your opportunity to head home if you and your family need to do so to give space for the families for the next performance. If your family is involved in both, please feel free to stay during the “intermission”.

Call times for students to arrive are as follows:

Kinder-2nd grade are to arrive outside the gym in covered area, 5:10 p.m.
3rd-5th Grade are to arrive outside the gym in covered area, 6:40 p.m.

Wear bright colors & sunglasses. Friday: Our Future Starts Here – Wear your Hawthorne gear or school colors.


Week of March 1, 2026:

  • Monday March 2 – Friday March 6: Read Across America Week. Monday: Reading builds teamwork; Wear your team’s favorite gear. Tuesday: Reading creates community; Wear something with a message. Wednesday: Reading is relaxing; Wear your comfy clothes or pajamas. Thursday: Dress in your favorite travel, explorer, or adventurer outfit. Friday: Reading is fun; Wear your Hawthorne gear or colors.
  • Tuesday, March 3: 9 a.m. Black History Assembly – Due to limited space, we ask only the parents of our 3rd graders attend. Thank you.
  • Monday, March 9: Join us in recognizing Billy Frank Jr. Day.
  • Thursday March 12: 6 p.m. Budget forum with principal. The FOH PTA budget committee will review. Child care and dinner provided.

Note from Ms. Campbell: The Global Reading Challenge will be starting soon! The Global Reading Challenge is a reading incentive program for 4th and 5th graders enrolled in Seattle Public Schools, sponsored by the Seattle Public Library. Students form teams and read selected books, then take part in a trivia competition. All 4th and 5th graders are encouraged to participate, but it is entirely optional. Applications were passed out last week, please check in with your child to see if they are interested. The program begins in November and culminates in a Hawthorne GRC Competition in February. The winners of the school challenge move on to the Semi-Finals at the Seattle Public Library where they will compete against other reading teams from around the district. Celebrate Dia De Los Muertos with Hawthorne on Nov 6 at 5 p.m. Dia de Los muertos is a 15-year Hawthorne tradition started by a family to share and showcase Hispanic traditions and culture.

Note from Mrs. Britta: This October, Hawthorne has participated in National Bullying Prevention Month, an opportunity to reinforce kindness and respect across our community.

Hawthorne will celebrate Unity Day on Wednesday, October 22—a day to practice kindness, inclusivity, and respect while learning to recognize, prevent, and respond to bullying. Our 4th and 5th graders will share what they’ve learned about respect, empathy, and standing up for others!

Every student can celebrate by wearing orange (the national color for bulling prevention) or their Hawthorne gear! If you have questions about school safety or bullying prevention, please contact Principal Elizabeth Flavors or school counselor Britta McClure.

Cell Phone/ Smart Watch Policy

Reminder: Students are not to use cell phones or smart watches during school hours. If needing to communicate with your student, please call the main office do not text cell phones or watches during school hours. Students caught using their cell phone/smart watches during school hours:

  • 1st Offense – Student(s) receive a warning.
  • 2nd Offense – Phone/watch is taken and returned at end of day.
  • 3rd Offense – Phone/watch taken & given to Ms. Flavors. Parent will have to pick it up.

SPS Culinary Services – offers a variety of convenient ways to pay for school meals by credit/ debit card online at the My School Bucks link on the SPS culinary webpage link below; as well as cash or check which can me given to our lunchroom manager payable to Culinary Services.

FOH fall spiritwear sale is on now! Info: Stock up on Hawthorne gear for the season! Kid sizes include t-shirts for $10 and sweatshirts for $35. Adult sizes include long-sleeve tees for $25 and sweatshirts for $50. You can also donate a t-shirt to a student in need!

Sale runs through Tuesday, Oct. 7 at 10 p.m.

All proceeds support the FOH general fund, funding classroom supplies, staff appreciation, student enrichment programs, and school events.

After-School Enrichment classes begin next week, October 6th. We still have openings on all three days available. Also, the following classes are now open to additional grades.

  • Chill & Mindfulness
    • (Tuesdays): Now open to 1st – 5th Grades
  • Art Exploratorium
    • Thursday): Now open to K5 – 5th Grades

In addition, due to high demand, Pokemon will be opening 2 additional spaces on a first-come, first-serve basis.
